Little Musicians of Kelating
Traditional Balinese music depends on more than individual talent. It is built through discipline, coordination, and the ability to listen and respond as part of a group.
For younger generations, regular access to teachers, instruments, and rehearsal spaces is essential to keeping this knowledge alive as part of Bali's intangible cultural heritage.
Little Musicians of Kelating was developed by Soori Foundation in collaboration with a local sanggar in Kelating. The programme currently supports more than 10 children from the age of nine, who gather for training every Monday and Saturday. Originally created to accompany the Little Dancers of Kelating, the programme introduces the children to Balinese Gamelan and the close relationship between music, movement, and collective performance.
Through regular practice, they develop musical technique alongside concentration, teamwork, discipline, and confidence. Soori Foundation provides rehearsal facilities, musical instruments, training uniforms, formal performance attire, and support for instructors. The young musicians are given opportunities to perform for guests during selected events at Soori Bali, often bringing music and dance together within the same cultural presentation.
These performances allow the children to apply what they have learned in front of an audience and experience their cultural tradition as something active, relevant, and valued. They also help the musicians understand their role within an ensemble, where every rhythm depends on careful coordination with others.
