Education for Kelating
Access to education is shaped not only by schools, but also by the resources and learning opportunities available around them.
For children, language skills can influence confidence, academic participation, and future possibilities. For adults, practical English can support communication and wider opportunities. Literacy remains equally important, providing the foundation for comprehension, curiosity, and independent learning.
Education for Kelating brings these needs together through complimentary English lessons and a community-focused literacy programme. Soori Foundation supports English classes for both children and adults, with sessions held at a local elementary school as well as within Soori Bali.
The children's English classes give young learners regular opportunities to become familiar with the language, practise using it, and build confidence in a supportive environment. By making the classes complimentary, the programme helps ensure that cost does not become a barrier to participation. English classes are also available to adults in the village, extending access to learning as a continuing community resource.
The language programme is complemented by the Library and Literacy Programme, developed in partnership with the Indonesian Children's Literacy Foundation. Through this collaboration, Soori Foundation supports the sustainability of two nearby child-friendly school libraries.
These libraries provide welcoming spaces where children can explore stories, discover new subjects, and build a consistent relationship with reading. Access to books also reinforces the children's English classes by creating additional opportunities to encounter words, ideas, and language beyond scheduled lessons.
